A study showed that high doses of vitamin K2 (MK-4) menatetrione (aka menaquinone-4) reversed arterial plaque in rats by 37% in six weeks. Be aware that six weeks to a lab rat is equivalent to about twenty years in humans. So, we can assume that this kind of thing will not happen quickly. It took years for the plaque to build up, so it will take time to reverse it.
Vitamin K2 (MK-4 and MK-7) does this by activating matrix Gla protein (MGP), which guides calcium away from soft tissues, such as artery linings.
This might be a missing link in cardiovascular health that helps to correct the notion that calcium supplementation causes cardiovascular problems.
Without adequate vitamin K2, MGP can’t do its job of protecting arteries from calcification – or reversing calcification.
The notion that calcium supplementation causes arterial plaque to form has been shown to be incorrect in a study of over 500,000 people, the largest study that ever looked at this issue.
Rather than calcium supplementation being the cause, it is more likely that a deficiency of vitamin K2 is one cause of the development of arterial plaque. Inflammation, in general, contributes to several markers of cardiovascular damage.
There are other factors, such as blood fats: Lp(a), HDL2, LDL-C, oxidized LDL and whether your LDL cholesterol is Pattern A (large buoyant particles) or Pattern B (small particle), so vitamin K2 is unlikely to be the single answer to obtain optimal cardiovascular health.
However, this data does imply that its role in cardiovascular health is of major importance.
Because it has a relatively short half-life of about four to five hours, optimal dosing for vitamin K2 (MK-4) for humans appears to be 15 mg taken three times a day and it is best to take it with meals that include some fat, because, it is fat-soluble, so fat improves its absorption.
One natural source of MK-4 is Green Pasture X-Factor Gold High Vitamin Butter Oil.

Other Benefits: Better Bone Health
And Reduced Cancer Risk
MK-4 also benefits bone health.
For instance, a two-year Japanese study found that vitamin K2 (MK-4) reduced the incidence of vertebral (spine) fractures by 52% in 120 patients with osteoporosis, compared with patients who did not receive this nutrient.
It also has anti-cancer effects.
In a small Japanese study of 40 women who had liver cirrhosis from viral infections, there was a marked difference in the incidence of liver cancer, with only 2 of 21 developing cancer in the vitamin K2 (MK-4) group compared with 9 of 19 in the control group.

At 65 years of age, Michael has been studying health and ageing for almost 50 years. After experiencing re-growth and darkening of his own hair, as confirmed by numerous friends, caused by experimentation with specific nutrients, he has also experienced a tremendous reduction in facial wrinkles because of the use of various nutritional supplements, biological peptides, botanicals and a specific whole foods diet. Michael further experienced tremendous improvements in his long-term and short-term memory with nootropics.
